L'any va començar de manera tranquila a la universitat. Gener i febrer són mesos de vacances d'hivern per als universitaris. Però març és el mes en que es comença el curs acadèmic a Corea, així que tots els nous estudiants d'universitat, desitjosos de deixar enrere la duríssima vida d'institut, van començar per fi la que serà segurament la millor etapa de les seves vides. Això es va traduïr en les universitats plenes a vessar, cues a la cafeteria, gentada als ascensors... i tots els bars propers a la universitat plens cada nit. (Sí, cada nit: dilluns, dimarts, dimecres...aquí la gent no descansa mai!).

Year started peacefuly at the university. January and February are winter vacation months for university students. But march is the month when the academical year is started, so all the freshmen, willing to forget about their highschool hard times, started the best time of their lives. And saying this means a crowded university, crowded cafeteria, library, elevators...and crowded literally-all-the-bars-near-the-university. Every night! (yes, everynight...monday, tuesday, wednesday...people never rest in Seoul!).

Mentres que el batxillerat és una època en que s'ha d'estudiar moltíssim, els primers anys d'universitat són entesos com una època de relax per als estudiants, sobretot per a les noies. Els nois aprofiten al màxim aquest parell d'any abans d'anar a fer el servei militar, que els farà perdre dos anys de les seves vides. Tot això fa que les festes siguin contínues, i que en pocs dies, gaudint de la nova llibertat, es formin moltes noves parelles (la majoria de les quals trencarà al poc temps). 
Highschool is a time when people have to study all day, but first years of university are the time when students can relax and enjoy their lives (finally). Girls enjoy themselves and boys make the most of the few time lfet before going to military service. This means partying continuosly, and many new couples after some days (the majority of whom will break up soon...).

Però tot això tampoc té tanta pinta de diferent com qualsevol dissabte a la nit per Barcelona. Joves de festa són joves de festa arreu del món. Què és diferent? Bé, algunes tradicions universitàries! Sortia jo innocentment un dia de la biblioteca quan de sobte em vaig trobar tot de gent agrupada davant d'alguna cosa, i tot de caixes de maggoli (vi d'arròs) i pica-piques apilades allà al davant. Hi havia un noi dirigint l'event, i un altre que estava fent referències a alguna cosa. Tothom dirigia l'atenció cap a aquell punt, així que per suposat vaig anar a fer de turista. Quina va ser la meva sorpresa quan vaig veure que l'objecte al que estaven idolatrant era... 
UN CAP DE PORC!
But all this is not that different from any other university in the world a Saturday night. Young people in a party are young people in a party everywhere. What's different? Well, some university traditions! I was innocently going out of the library when I suddently saw a crowd of people looking towards something, piles of boxes of rice wine and a huge bag of snacks.A boy was saying some words and another was bowing to something on the floor. Of course I went there to practise my favourite sport: showing I'm a foreigner and I don't know what's going on. To my astonishment they were all bowing and adoring...a PIG'S HEAD!

A la taula, igual que durant la cerimònia de cap d'any, hi havia fruites i diversos menjars. El noi que veieu agenollat feia reverències al desafortunat porc mentres tota la gentada s'ho mirava. 

Aquesta cerimònia tradicional es celebra per desitjar bona sort i bona voluntat en la nova tasca, que en aquest cas és el nou semestre. Hi participen les delegacions d'estudiants més importants, i això a Corea no és dir poca cosa. (S'ho prenen molt en serio això de ser representats de classe, curs o estudiants, i és un fet que et servirà per al currículum, així que la gent hi posa ganes). 

On the table, like in New Year ceremony, there were fruits and some foods. The guy on the floor was bowing to the unlucky animal (or part of animal) while all the other people was staring at him.

This traditional ceremony wishes good luck for the new semester. The most important student delegations participate in it, and here in Korea, that means something. (In Spain we really don't care about student organitzations or being the class president, but here this is going to help you for your resumé, so people really pays attention to it). 

Ja ho veieu, molta gent! Val a dir que segons els meus càlculs hi havia el doble de persones que de botelles, per lo que aquí es tocava a mitja botella per cap. Tot sigui pel menjar i beure gratis no? Crec que el proper cop jo també m'apuntaré a fer reverències a un porc si amb això em donen de menjar! 
As you can see, a lot of people! Following my calculations, there were the doble of people than wine bottles, so every person could drink half a bottle! Whatever for free drinks and food, right? I think I will bow to the pig next time too, if they are willing to give me some food!

El menjar de la universitat

Ara parlaré sobre un tema que pels que em coneixeu, sabeu que em preocupa molt. Es tracta del menjar!!! Sí, sí, el que pot ser una tortura per qualsevol altre (menjar coses rares cada dia) per mi és un dels principals alicients de venir aquí. 

Sembla mentida (¿?) però aquí la gent estudia molt! (I amb aquest fred, jo també en tinc moltes ganes) Per això normalment es passen tot el dia al campus universitari, i dinen i sopen allà. Hi ha dos zones de restaurant diferents, i diverses cafeteries repartides per tot el campus (ja m'explicaré sobre la cultura del cafè en un altre post, perquè és digne de menció) Els dies entre setmana tens quatre menús per escollir al pis de dalt i diversos restaurant (inclòs un BURGER KING) al pis d'abaix. Tries el que vols en una màquina, pagues i et dóna un tíquet, que dones a la barra corresponent del plat que has escollit. I us preguntareu: com m'entero del que vaig a demanar? Doncs amb aquest fantàstic muntatge:

Cada dia tens la disposició dels plats que s'ofereixen a la cafeteria de dalt. Són tan realistes que tenen una pinta molt suculenta (a vegades millor que l'original (--')).  

A més sempre tens disponible "kimchi" (un must del menjar coreà, col fermentada picant) i una espècie de nap groc tallat a rodantxes, per agafar-ne tant com vulguis. I és que cada àpat coreà està format sempre de petits plats acompanyants, que són gratuïts a tots els restaurants, i varien d'un lloc a un altre. I la cafeteria universitària també és un restaurant, així que també en té. A la foto següent es pot apreciar que hi ha diversos platets diferents. Normalment hi ha una mica de sopa i alguns picapiques, com aquestes tiretes blanques, que són calamar. Aquella cosa groga és una espècie de truita. A més de l'omnipresent arròs!

Però el millor de tot és... el preu!! Cada safateta d'aquestes costa entre 1800-3000 wons. Cosa que equival a uns 1'5-2'8 euros! Així que evidentment cada dia vaig a menjar allà :D A més l'aigua és gratis a tota la universitat, així que només has de pagar si vols beure alguna cosa especial com refrescos.

El Taesung diu: Malgrat que la universitat és privada és considerada un lloc públic. Per això els preus són baixos en totes les coses que hi venen, i en el menjar també. Sovint hi ha gent de fora de la universitat que ve a menjar aquí perquè és molt barat, encara que no molta perquè no està ben vist. I de fet, això de que sigui una universitat budista i alhora privada no acaba de tenir sentit, així que és una manera de fer-ho públic.

I'm going to talk about a topic I'm really concerned: food! What may be a torture for other people (eating strange things everyday), for me is one of the main attractions of comming here to live.

Could seem strange (¿?) but here people really study a lot! (And with this super cold weather I'm also very willing to do it). Because of this they spend the whole day in the campus, and eat lunch and dinner there. There are two different food courts, and many cafeterias spread over the campus (I'm going to explain about the korean culture for cafe in a later post, because it's really interesting). On weekdays you have 4 different menus in the top floor of the cafeteria, and different restaurants on the ground floor, including a BURGUER KING. You just have to choose what you wanna eat in a machine, pay, get a ticket, and go straight to the bar where they serve the food you want. And your question could be: but how do you know what are you asking for? For this purpose they have this (photo 1).

Every day you have the sample of the food they offer. They are so realistic that they look really tasty (sometimes even more than the original dish (--')).

Besides you always have free kimchi (a must of the korean food) and some kind of yellow turnip. The korean meal is always compounded of many little dishes, called side dishes, and that are free in all the restaurants, being different from one place to another. And the cafeteria is also a restaurant, so they also have side dishes. In the photo 2 you can see many different small dishes. Usually there's a little soup and some snacks, like that white stripes (squid) or that yellow thing (omelette). And for sure the omnipresent rice!

But he best thing is... the price! Every of these trays costs between 1800-3000wons, which means 1'5-2'8 euros! So every day I eat there :D And the water is free all around the campus, so you only have to pay if you want something special to drink, like some soda.

Taesung says: although the university is private is considered kind of public place. Because of this the prices are really low. Usually some people from outside come here to eat because it's cheap, but not many because it looks a little tacky. And maybe someone could say that this of being a buddist university and being private doesn't make any sense, so this is the way to make it public.

La universitat

Per començar amb bon peu us presento la meva universitat! Aquí és on estudiaré coreà els propers sis mesos. 

És la universitat de Dongguk. Està situada al nord del riu Han, just davant de la parada de metro "Dongguk University". Com que Seül és una ciutat amb moltíssimes universitats és molt comú que les parades de metro es diguin "entrada de tal universitat". 

Les universitats tenen un campus bastant gran, si els comparem amb el que estem acostumats els que hem assistit a la universitat de Barcelona. En ells s'hi trobem totes les carreres que ofereix aquella universitat. En aquest cas Dongguk ofereix des d'arts, turisme, medicina, o dret fins a carrerres que ens poden sonar més exòtiques, com medicina oriental o estudis budistes. Perquè una altra de les característiques d'aquesta universitat és que es defineix com a budista, pel que no és extrany trobar monjos voltant pel campus.

En la foto es veu el pati principal de la universitat, on hi ha unes estàtues d'elefants i una de buda. Prometo explicar-me més sobre aquest aspecte en futurs posts. 

Aquí a corea entrar en una bona universitat és molt important. Anualment es fan llistes sobre quina és la millor, la segona millor, etc. A més també hi ha rànkings sobre les diferents especialitats de cada universitat. Tinc entès que Dongguk és la tretzena millor universitat cosa que està molt bé perque n'hi ha més de vint només a Seül. La manera d'avaluar aquests rànkings és també una mica misteriosa, però hi ha categories com "quantitat d'alumnes estrangers dins la universitat", cosa que porta evidentment a que les universitats ofereixin beques a molts estudiants estrangers per venir a estudiar aquí. Aquí us mostro una foto del campus amb els diferents edificis:

El Taesung diu: Aquesta universitat és famosa principalment per dos motius: el primer és pels estudis budistes i el segon per les carreres relacionades amb l'art. Molts cantants i actors famosos han sortit d'aquí. 
Els elefants són el símbol de la saviesa i la fortuna, un dels animals sagrats del budisme.

To start I would like to introduce to you my university! Here is where I am going to study korean for six months.

This is Dongguk University. It's placed north of the Han river, just in front of the "Dongguk University" metro station. Seoul is a city with a lot of universities, so it's quite common that de metro stations are named after the university which is in front of them, for example " Hongik University entrance". 

The universities here have a pretty big campus if we compare them to those in Barcelona. Inside of them we can find all the degrees that that university offers to students. In this case we can find art, medicine, tourism... but also more exotic degrees like oriental medecine and buddist philosophy. It could be interesting to say that this concrete university defines itself like a buddist university, and it's not weird to find monks walking through the campus.

In the photo you can see the main open space of the university, where there are some elephants statues an one of Buda. I promise more explanations about this in future posts. 

Here in Korea entering in a good university is really important. They make rankings of the better universities every year. Besides there are rankings of each degree in each university. I was told that Dongguk stands the 13th best university, which is a quite good position, if we have in mind that only in Seoul there are more than 20 universities. The way they make these rankings is a little misterious to me, but it seems that they evaluate aspects such as "amount of foreigner students" studying there. And of course consequently lots of universities offer schoolarships to foreigner students to come and study in their university.

Taesung says:  This university is famous for two things: the first one is the buddist studies and the second because of the degrees related with arts. Many famous singers and actors graduated in this university.

The elephants are the simbol of this university, and they are considered wise and fortunate.
