Els MUST de Corea, part 2

Bé! Ja tornem a tenir aquí la nostra secció més celebrada, els MUST de Corea, per saber allò que es porta en una gran metròpolis i allò que no!

Hey everybody! Here comes our most celebrated section, MUST have in Korea, to know what's in and what's out in this huge metropolis.

MUST 1: Calçat adequat
Suitable footwear

Ja porto unes setmanetes vivint aquí, i m'he adonat que hi ha una cosa que entre els estudiants (almenys aquells que s'ho volen pendre en serio) (i "en serio" aquí és una cosa totalment diferent de la d'allà), és indispensable. És, pel que he pogut veure, el calçat oficial de l'època d'examens, i com que aquesta gent sempre té algun examen o altre, sempre pots veure algú portant-lo. Em refereixo a les sabatilles? No. Potser són les crocs? Tampoc. És molt millor que tot això.
After some weeks living here, I realised that there is a thing that is indispensable among the students (at least those who are really diligent in their studies) (and really diligent takes a totally new meaning  here comparing with Catalonia). It's the official footwear for exams time!  And because these people are always preparing some exam, you can always see someone wearing them. Not boots, not sneakers, not even cozy slippers...

 Efectivament, el calçat oficial són unes xancles. Això sí, portades amb estil, amb mitjons i tot, i si pot ser, de colorins cridaners. Crec que ara per ara tindreu la mateixa cara que se'm va quedar a mi quan vaig veure per primer cop una persona a la biblioteca portant això als peus. Vaig preguntar el per què, i se'm va explicar que és un símbol de "he d'estudiar diligentment". Si portes això, evidentment, encara que vulguis, no pots sortir gaire de la biblioteca, i molt menys sortir por ahi. No et queda altre que quedar-te a la biblio, a estudiar, perquè aquí ningú està a la biblio parlant (són una raça superior). 

But this! Yes, this is the official footwear indeed. How do you call these in English? In Spain we call them chanclas. The thing is they were these in a stylish way: with colourful and flashy socks. By know maybe your face is the same I had when I first saw someone wearing this in the library. I asked why? I was told that it's a simbol of hard-studying. If you are wearing these, it means that even wanting to, you are not going to go out of the library, and of course you are not going to go to any bar. You don't have any other chance than to stay in the library, studying. Because people here don't talk in the library (they are a highest race, these koreans. I would be expelled from the library the first day).

MUST 2:

I aquí us presento el segon MUST del dia:
Let me introduce you the second MUST of the day:

El water del futur! Xorrillos d'aigua (calenteta) per no trobar a faltar el paper de water mai més. Molt agradable, estic esperant que els comercialitzin a Catalunya per posar-ne un al mig del pati i fer de font d'aigua pels ocellets. Però el que més us agradarà saber és que la tassa està calenteta quan t'hi asseus. Snif snif, i amb el fred que fa als lavabos aquí, s'agraeix. 

Però deixem-nos de tonteries i donem pas al tercer MUST. Aquest és un Must interessant i útil de veritat. (Converses interiors meves: -Marta, la tassa del water calenteta és útil de veritat! - Ja, però la gent de Barcelona això no ho comprèn... -Tens raó, millor dissimulem i fem veure que nosaltres tampoc ho pensem...)

Ehem... bé com anava dient... 

A toiled come from the future! Streams of hot water that could make you forget about toilet paper. Very pleasant, I'm just wainting for some company to start commercializing these in Catalonia for placing one in the middle of my patio to work as a fountain for birds. But the best is yet to come. THE TOILET BOWL IS WARM!!! Yes, and with such a cold restrooms they have, it's really handy.

But let's stop talking about foolish things and let's talk about the third MUST. This is a really useful Must. (Inner conversation: -Marta, the warm toilet bowl is a very useful invention indeed! -I know, but people in Barcelona can't understand that...they are 18ºC these days...! - You're right, let's just pretend we don't thing is that amazing...)

Ehem...as I was saying...

MUST 3: Targeta de T-Money 
T-Money Card

Té infinits usos que encara estic descobrint. El més evident és el de targeta de transports. És la T-10 d'aquí, però enlloc de amb viatges va amb diners. Però és que realment pots pagar de tot a diversos llocs. De moment he descobert que es pot pagar a la cafeteria de la universitat amb això, i t'estalvies la cua dels tiquets! I encara millor, crec, (no ho tinc gaire clar) que amb la meva nova targeta del mòbil, anomenada LTE, la T-Money va integrada, així que d'alguna manera crec que puc pagar només posant el mòbil sobre de les superficies, però encara estar per demostrar. Si més no, això de la T-Money és un sistema integrat de pagament que va molt bé i és molt pràctic. Hi ha gent que la té integrada a la targeta de crèdit o a la de la Universitat. Jo la tinc per separat. Es recarrega als terminals de metro en màquines com aquesta:
It has infinite uses that I'm still discovering. Of course it works as a transportation card. You put some money, and pay with it. But I just discovered you can pay in the University Cafeteria!! Ohhh amazing!! And then you don't have to make any line. And there's something about my new SIM card of my cellphone that I still have to discover... but it said something about T-Money... I will find out! (When I learn korean, because at the moment it's quite impossible for me to understand any of the information I find xD).

MUST 4: Tenir sempre un budell buit
Be always a little hungry...

Per tot Seül hi ha centenars de paradetes de menjar de carrer. És impressionant veure com aquesta gent tan primeta es passa tot el sant dia menjat. Seran els gens? Serà el tipus de menjar? (que d'altra banda tampoc em sembla molt sa en aquestes parades... tot són fregits) Lo que segur que és és molta enveja per part meva, que em passaria el dia enxufada a llocs d'aquests. 
Around Seoul there are hundreds of cannopies like this in the photo selling streetfood. It's quite impressing to see how these super skinny people spend half of their day eating. Could be because of the geens? Or because of the kind of food? One thing sure is I'm really jealous: I'd be all the day eating there, but I'm not sure of not ending up resembling a meatball.

Com veieu hi ha un quiosc, on es fa el menjar, i una mica de toldo, on la gent s'aixopluga mentres menja. Perquè això d'agafar algo i menjar-s'ho mentres es camina, aquí no es fa. Algunes paradetes tenen fins i tot uns tamburets on la gent s'asseu per menjar tranquil·lament.

De menjars n'hi ha de lo més variat. Prometo ben aviat un post exclusiu sobre el menjar de carrer, que va des de dolços fins a salsitxes empalades en un pinxo. 

Crec que aquest tipus de menjar està explícitament prohibit a Catalunya, perquè mai he vist cap parada que cuini el menjar directament allà, amb excepció de les xurreries, on cuinen patates fregides i xurros. Suposo que està considerat totalment antihigiènic. Tampoc és que aquests quioscos siguin la repanotxa de nets, però quan ets turista t'ho mires tot amb uns ulls diferents, i no em sembla pas que estiguin bruts. I de moment no m'ha agafat cap xungo estomacal, això deu voler dir que estan bé. I com diu el Taesung aquí la gent "confien els uns en els altres", i suposo que això s'aplica també al menjar.

As you can see there's a small stand with a canopy, where people take shelter while they eat. And because here people don't really like eating while they walk, some stands even have stools to sit down while you eat.

There are many kinds of food. I'm preparing a post about streetfood (that can be both sweets or impalated sausages in a long toothpick). 

I think that streetfood is explicitly prohibited in Catalonia, because I've only seen churros, french fries and frankfurts being sold in fairs, but never in the street like that. Perhaps they think it's antihigienic. Ok, let's accept the truth: this stands are not shiny, but because I'm a tourist I regard everything with different eyes, and I don't think they are that dirty. And I didn't have any stomach problem so this may mean that they are ok. And like Taesung says, here people trust each other, so maybe it can be also be related to food. 

MUST 5: Guants tecnològics 
Technological gloves

Quantes vegades se us han quedat els dits glaçats al intentar teclejar l'iphone perquè us heu hagut de treure els guants per poder-lo fer servir? CAP??? A mi cada dia!!! Vaya un timo de país... El fet és que pensant en aquest problema això ho han resolt amb uns guants que permet fer servir l'iphone mentre els portes posats. Útil i senzill. A Barcelona només els he vist a MUJI per 20 euros. Aquí m'han costat 4 :D felicitat absoluta...

How many times your fingers got frozen while typing on your iphone because you had to take off your gloves for using it? ZERO?? It happens everyday to me... Lucky you! The thing is that this problem has already been solved with gloves that allow you to use your cellphone while wearing them. Useful and easy. In Barcelona I've only seen them in MUJI for 20 euros. I payed 4 :D Complete happiness...

Les puntes blanques dels tres dits són les que funcionen per teclejar. M'agradaria afegir que això que veieu al terra és tot neu, perquè senyores i senyors, ha tornat a nevar.
The white tips on my fingers are the one which allow you to type. And I would like to add that all that white thing on the floor is snow. Ladies and gentelmen, it snowed again indeed.

Els "MUST" de Corea // MUST have in Korea

A tot arreu hi a modes que venen i van. Un any estan de moda els barrets i al següent les sabates de taló d'agulla, i ningú no s'estranya. En canvi hi ha coses que romanen allà per sempre, o almenys durant un llaaaarg període de temps. Normalment són coses relacionades amb la cultura d'aquell lloc. 

Avui us presento alguns dels MUST de Corea. Així que si teniu pensat venir a passar una temporadeta aquí, feu una ullada a aquest post!!

MUST 1: Sabatilles d'estar per casa

Categoria d'indispensabilitat: ALTA

Utilitat: MOLT ALTA

Raons: A les cases coreanes ( i hotels!! i alguns restaurants també) t'has de treure les sabates a l'entrada de casa. Per tant, a menys que la casa estigui molt neta o tingui parquet per tot arreu, t'has de posar alguna cosa si no vols acabar amb cangrena als peus o els mitjons d'un color diferent per la part de sota.

Normalment les cases coreanes tenen un sistema de calefacció que funciona per sota terra des de fa segles (evidentment llavors només ho tenien als palaus). A casa meva també hi és, però només a trossos. Aquest terra tan magnífic que veieu és el de la meva habitació, on hi ha calefacció (però amb el fred que fa, sovint ho dubto... sort que ja he après a fer servir els controls de la calefacció!!). Però al entrar, després de treure'm le sabates, tinc unes escaletes per pujar, així que sempre tinc preparades en un graó les meves fantàstiques sabatilles made in DAISO. 

MUST 2: Un termo

Categoria d'indispensabilitat: ALTA

Utilitat: MODERADA
Raons: Com ja havia comentat l'aigua a l'universitat és gratuïta. Però no només això, sinó que et trobes màquines dispensadores d'aigua per tot arreu. I tenen aigua calenta i aigua freda per escollir. Així que en qualsevol moment et pots fer un tè (venen còmodes sobrets de té en pols per dissoldre en aigua) o beure aigua ben freda (cosa que no penso fer perquè ja fa prou fred!!). A més els asiàtics, almenys els que he conegut, tenen la costum de beure de tant en tant aigua calenta, i val a dir que m'he fet fan. I amb aquest termo encara més.

 MUST 3: Unes carmanyoles

Categoria d'indispensabilitat: ALTA

Utilitat: ALTA
Raons: Són indispensables en tota cuina coreana. Aquí la gent no posa les coses en un bol i cap a la nevera i llestos, sinó que són molt més curosos amb el menjar. Si obriu qualsevol nevera coreana (no és que jo n'hagi obert moltes tampoc eh, no anem a pensar que em dedico a això), trobareu una quantitat inusual de tàpers per tot arreu. La fruita i la verdura no estaran posades en tàpers sempre i quan no estiguin obertes o tallades, llavors també hi aniran. I és més: no posen mai menjar cuinat a la nevera, perquè diuen que després el gust ja no és el mateix, així que intenten cuinar lo just per menjar. 

MUST 4: Alguna cosa per posar a l'arròs

Categoria d'indispensabilitat: ALTA

Utilitat: ALTA

Raons: Sí, els asiàtics es passen el dia menjant arròs. Arròs per esmorzar, per dinar i per sopar. I clar, amb tant d'arròs, doncs potser al final s'avorreixen. Però no us preocupeu perquè ho tenen tot pensat. Tenen coses per posar-hi a l'arròs (i no és tomàquet solís).  Algunes d'elles són coses com bonítol assecat, verduretes seques, salsa picant... i d'altres són el MUST que us presento avui. Algues!

 Els que em coneixeu segurament haureu hagut de patir que us intenti encolomar menjar algues en algun sopar dels que haguem fet. El fet és que aquí, apart d'una immensa varietat d'enciams, també tenen una immensa varietat d'algues, el que fa les amanides i sopes molt més variades. Les de la foto són algues per posar-hi arròs (i el que vulguis) a dins. Fan aproximadament uns 10x12cm. Agafes una mica d'arròs, fas un paquetet, i te'l menges. Fàcil i bo. Love it!

Espero que us hagi agradat la nova secció! De tant en tant aniré afegint més MUST, sobretot a mesura que en vagi descobrint més.

Around the world there are fashions that come and go. One year it's trendy to wear hats, and the following one, high heels, and everyone thinks it's totally normal. But there are some thing that linger there forever, or during a looooong time. Usually those are things related to the culture of that place.
So today I'm going to introduce to your the MUST HAVE of Korea. So, if you are planning to come soon to the Korean land, you MUST read this post!

Pictue 1:Cozy slippers

Grade of Indispensability: High
Utility: Very high
Why? In the Korean houses (and hotels!! and in some restaurants too) you have to take off your shoes before getting inside. So, with the exception of really clean houses o with wooden floor everywhere, you need to put something on you feet to end up with gangrene or your socks with a different color on their bottom part.

Usually the korean houses have a heating system that works under the floor, from centuries ago (of course only palaces had this kind of heating system). I have it in my home too, but only in some parts. This fantastic wooden floor you can see in picture 1 is my bedroom's! (but usually it's so cold I really don't know wether I'm walking on a wooden floor or not... Lucky me, I've just learnt how to use the heating system controller!). But after entering home, I have to climb up a stariway, so after taking off my shoes I always have ready my lovely slippers made in DAISO.

Picture 2: Thermos (hot water flask)

Grade of Indispensability: High
Utility: Moderated
Why? As I already told you, the water in university is always free. But not only this, but you can find free water machines everywhere around it. And they have both hot water and cold. So, any moment you like you can make yourself a tea (They sell very convenient powdered tea to dissolve in water) o drink cold water (which I'm not going to do with this horrible weather unless I decided to commit suicide). Moreover, some of the asian people I knew have the habit of drinking tepid/hot water. And I'm fan of it. And with my thermo, even more.

Picture 3: Tupperware

Grade of Indispensability: High
Utility: High
Why? They are indispensable in every Korean kitchen. People don't put the food in a bowl and then to the fridge, they are much more careful here. If you open any Korean fridge (it's not my hobby eh? it just happened I opened a few of them!) you will find and unusual amount of tuppers everywhere. Fruit and vegetables are not going to be inside of a tupper unless they are already cut or open. Furthermore, they never put any cooked food inside the fridge, because they say it changes food flavour, so they try to cook the just amount for eating.

Picture 4: Something to put in rice

Grade of Indispensability: High
Utility: High
Why? Yes, the Asian people are always eating rice. Rice for breakfast, rice for lunch and rice for dinner (Luckily they don't have more meals, if not, they would also have rice for sure). So of course could happen that they get bored of it. But don't worry because they already solved that problem! They have many things to put into rice (not only tomato sauce like we have...). Some of them are dried bonito, vegetables, sauces... and other are the MUST I offer you today: seaweed!!

The ones who know me for sure had suffered from time to time my obstination to make you eat seaweed. The fact is that here, among a large variety of lettuce leaves, they also have a big variety of seaweed, which makes salads much more varied. The ones on the photo are called Kim, and are supposed to be used to put rice (or more things) inside. They measure aprox 10x12cm. Take a little rice (if you want you can use your hands, but some very skillfull people do this with chopstiks), make a little packet, and eat it. Easy & Good. Love it!
