Seoul's N Tower // La Torre N de Seül

Avui toca una mica de cultura sobre Seül! Us presento la N-Tower (torre N). 
Today let's learn a little bit about Seoul! Let me introduce you the N-Tower.

Com veieu no té forma d'N (¬¬) així que per què es diu Torre N? Doncs perquè esta a la muntanya de Namsan! I de fet Namsan vol dir literalment muntanya Sud, tot i que està al Nord del riu i a la part nord de Seül. Ara sí que ja no entenc res... Bé, el cas és que és la torre de comunicacions de Seül, igual que a Barcelona tenim la torre de Collserola. El que passa és que la N-Tower és molt més guay. Sí, sí, guay és la paraula. Ara veureu perquè.

As you can see it doesn't have N shape (¬¬) so, why it is called N-Tower? Well, simply because it's on Namsan Mountain. Actually Namsan means literlly South Mountain. But it's placed north of the river Han and in the north part of Seoul. I'm confused... One thing clear is that it's the communication tower of Seoul. In Barcelona we have Collserola tower, but N-Tower is much cooler than Barcelona's one. Yes "cool" is the exact word. You will see why.

Els coreans (suposo que en concret les coreanes) tenen molta afició a fer coses "romàntiques". Tot això de regalar bombons per Sant Valentí, anar a llocs "romàntics" en les cites, i en definitiva totes aquelles coses que normalment només surten a les pel·lícules, aquí a les noies els agrada molt, així que els nois ho fan. (Així és com es fa funcionar un país, sí senyor, fent cas a les noies). Això ha desembocat en tenir moltíssims cafès privats, sales multimèdia, i moltíssims llocs on les parelles passen l'estona. I la N-Tower és el lloc de referència per qualsevol parella. Perquè és el lloc de...
Korean (and in my guess korean women specially) really like doing "romantic" activities. Giving bombons for Saint Valentines, going to romantic places on your dates, and to put it mildly, all the things I've seen only in movies are super common in Korea. Girls like, boys do. (That's the secret of how to make a country work properly, obeying girls wishes!!In Spain they should learn...). Because of this there are hundreds of couple cafès, multimedia rooms and places were couples can spend their time together. And N-Tower is THE place for couples. Because it's the place for...

Ja veieu! I Love You (T'estimo). El primer que et trobes al pujar la muntanyeta és una pista clara del que et trobaràs més endavant. En aquesta ciutat ningú t'enganya mai. 
Aha!! I Love you! It's the first thing you see when you climb that little hill that is Namsan. And this sculpture is a hint of what you are going to find later. In this city no-one is going to con you. 

El que passa és que jo no estava preparada mentalment per tot el que va venir a continuació...
The only problem is I was not mentally prepared for what came next...

Aquests arbres estan fets a base de candaus. Les parelles (també ho pots fer sol, però queda una mica tristet eh?) que venen aquí posen el seu candau amb els noms o misstages varis penjats dels arbres...
These trees are made of locks. The couples (you can also do it by yourself but it looks a little depressing, isn't it?) who come here write their names on the lock and hang it on the trees...

...I en definitiva de tot arreu. No sabeu el que em va costar trobar aquest racó per fer-me una foto amb Seül de fons. És literalment lúnic espai lliure de candaus. Semblen una plaga. En principi la idea és penjar el teu candau, (que és el símbol de l'amor etern, em suposo) i llençar la clau. Això estaria bé si no fos perquè ja al 2001 aquesta torre havia recaptat 20.000.000 de visitants, i el 20% dels visitants que venen hi deixen el seu candau penjat. Això va desembocar en:
... And hanging from everywhere! It was hard to find this little spot to take a photo with Seoul as a background. It's literally the only place free of locks. It's kind of plague. The initial idea iwas to hang the lock (as a simbol of eternal love I guess?) and throw the key away. Looks nice, the only problem is that in 2001 the tower accumulated 20,000,000 visitors (luckily not at once), and 20% of the visitors had hung their own lock. So this resulted in...

"Prohibit llençar les claus". 

Està clar el que va passar aquí. De sobte la muntanya de Namsan va patir una invasió de claus de candaus. A més, debia ser bastant molest anar caminant per sota la torre (hi ha algunes rutes de senderisme per aquí), i que t'anessin caient claus a cada moment. A més trobo que és molt millor que les parelles conservin la clau per si algun dia es volen repensar. Si depèn de qui comencés a posar un candau per cada novio que té, podria omplir una paret sencereta. A més davant d'algunes ruptures és millor poder recuperar el candau i guardar-lo en un lloc segur (així tampoc queden evidències físiques de l'error en qüestió).

"Don't throw your key away".

It's clear what happened here. Suddently Namsan mountain underwent an invasion of lock-keys. I guess it was quite irritating to be peacefully walking below the tower (there are some hiking trails around there) and keep feeling keys bumping into your head (such a humorless people). It's much better to keep the key just for in case you wanna make up your mind about you current couple. In addition to this, if some people I know started hanging a lock for every couple they have, they could fill up an entire wall just by themselves. And after some break ups could happen that you want to go and recover that lock and keep it in a safe place (therefore there will be no existing evidences about that mistake).

Però bueno quina vergonya!! En un país on no et pots fer petons pel carrer per llei*, i aquests pocavergonyes de l'organització de namsan incitant a que les parelles s'asseguin juntes als bancs!! No sé on anirem a parar... Però per a aquells profans catalans com jo, fa gràcia el banc no?
This is such a shame!!! In a country where is illegal by law to kiss in the street, and this shameless directors of Namsan inciting couples to sit this close on the benches! Where's this world headed? But for profane catalans like me, this bench is so cute, isn't it?

Però bé, un cop superat el trauma, ens vam disposar a pujar a la torre, que és al que havíem vingut. (Tot lo dels candaus era un extra).
Anyway, after overcoming my trauma, we went to climb that tower!! (Methaphorically speaking). (All that explanation about the locks was just an extra).

No cal que us l'estudieu, però crec que us poden cridar l'atenció aquests ossos que hi ha per aquí voltant. EFECTIVAMENT hi ha un TEDDY BEAR MUSEUM (museu d'ossets de peluix) a la Torre de Namsan!! No us havia dit que era un lloc guay?? Està al pis -1 per dissimular, però igualment està allà...
You don't need to study it, but I maybe you are wondering what all that bears mean. There is a TEDDY BEAR MUSEUM indeed in N-Tower!! I told you it was a "cool" place!! (It's underground, maybe for pretending it's not there, but it's still there... 

A la planta baixa hi ha alguns restaurants, com l'autoanomenada "millor hamburgueseria de Seül", que a primera vista semblava com qualsevol altre hamburgueseria, però bé suposo que és millor que el McDonald's. A la quarta planta hi ha l'observatori principal, i a la cinquena un restaurant francès dirigit per un xef amb una estrella michelin. Val a dir que a Corea compten les plantes diferent que a casa nostra: la planta Baixa és la número 1 i etc. I per suposat no tenen principal ni entresol (qui es va inventar aquesta xorrada de l'entresol??). 
In the ground floor there are some restaurant, like the autoproclaimed "The best burguer in Seoul". At first sight it looked to me like any other burguer, but I guess it's still better than McDonald's. In the 3rd floor (4th if you are american) there's the observatory and in the top floor there's a French restaurant with a chef who owns(?) a michelin star.

La millor hora per anar a la torre de Namsan és just abans del crepuscle, i no per l'aparició de vampirs ni res semblant, sinó perquè pots gaudir de la vista de dia, de la posta de Sol i de nit de Seül. I val la pena.
The best time for foing to Namsan it's just before twilight, not because of wampires, but because you can enjoy both day and night sight of Seoul. And it's worth it. 

Quan vam pujar, Seül tenia aquesta pinta. Els que hagueu pujat al Tibidabo i hagueu gaudit de les vistes de Barcelona, sabeu que la nostra ciutat us ocupa uns 100º de visió. És a dir, que si et gires d'esquena, el que veus són les taquilles del parc, però no més ciutat, perquè no n'hi ha. El tema és que Seül és una ciutat que ocupa els 360º de la torre, així que a cada vidre del mirador tens una vista semblant a aquesta. 

Inacabable i impressionant. 
When we arrived on the observatory, Seoul looked like this. In Barcelona we have something similar, it's called Collserola tower, and it's placed on the top of the mountain Collserola (you see, people who name towers are not very original in any part of the world). When you climb that tower and look to Barcelona, it fills more or less 100º of the total space of the observation deck. So if you go to the north part, you will see some other town or forest, but not Barcelona. My point is that when I kept walking around the observatory, everything, 360º was Seoul. Huge and amazing.

Això que veieu de fons és el riu Han. Tots aquests edificis gegants que podeu veure no són tot rascacels d'empreses. Aquí a Seül, per causa de la superpoblació, la gent viu en apartaments altíssims. Així que la majoria d'aquests edificis són apartaments de 20 o 30 plantes.

You can see Han river in this photo. All these big building are not only company buildings, but also places where people live. Here in Seoul, because of the huge population, people live in 20-30 story-buildings.

...Com aquest que veieu. Podeu endevinar què són les llums blanques i vermelles? Doncs, sí, són cotxes. I tots aquests edificis són apartaments! Per cert, la part dreta és el Barri de Gangnam!!! Ja veieu que tot i ser un dels barris més rics de Seül també viuen en graaaans apartaments.
 ...Like this in the photo. You can guess what all the white and red lights are. Of course, they are car's lights! And all that buildings are appartments. By the way, the right part of the photo is Gangnam!! Even being one of the richest neighborhoods in Seoul, they live in biiiig appartments.

I finalment quan es fa de nit, és quan Seül és més impresionant. La ciutat de les llums. M'encanta!
And finally, when night takes over Seoul, the view is still better. City of lights. Love it!

La Torre de Namsan va ser oberta al públic el 1980 i l'han anat millorant des de llavors. Però en la meva opinió, la millor millora que han fet és la següent:
The Namsan tower was oppened to public on 1980 and they kept improving it since then. But in my opinion, the best improvement they did is this:

Lo que traduït a la nostra llengua vernàcula vol dir "lavabo al cel".
Sky restroom!!!! Yujuuuuuuuuuu!!! 

Senyores i senyors, us presento el lavabo amb millors vistes de tot el món. Només li trobo dues pegues: 

1. evidentment és per nois, i jo aquí no hi vaig poder entrar (des d'aquí una crida contra la discriminació per sexes!! Els lavabos de noies tenien portes i no es podia veure res!!!)

2. No pots gaudir de la tassa de wàter calenteta (així que avancem per una banda i retrocedim per l'altra eh?).
Ladies and gentelmen, this is the restroom with better sights in the entire world. I only found 2 flaws:
1. Obviously only for guys. WTF?? Of course I couldn't enter here :( I want to make a call against the sex discrimination! In the ladies' one we had doors that of course didn't allow us to watch!!!
2. You can't enjoy the warm toilet bowl we were talking about in a previous post. (So the trick is moving fordward in some aspect but stepping back in others huh?).

Però bé, en general una grata experiència. 100% recomanat visitar-la, sobretot si us apassionen les vistes panoràmiques com a mi. M'hi vaig estar unes 4 hores. A més hi ha una botigueta de regalets on em vaig aprovisionar de regals per la familia. Allà també hi pots comprar els candaus per penjar, si és que trobes algun forat lliure. Em sap greu però jo no en vaig penjar cap, així que no us puc aconsellar. El que està clar és que tornaré, perquè no vaig entrar al museu d'ossets de peluix, i això no es pot perdonar. Us deixo amb les vistes de la torre de nit, que cada dia té un color diferent.
Jokes appart, it was such a nice experience. If I were you I wouldn't miss the opportunity to visit this attraction. It's not just I love panoramic views (which I really really do) it's just whole Seoul looks specially beautiful from a high place and at night. I spend there my whole afternoon. And there's some gift shop where I bought presents for family. And you can also buy some lock to hang (if you are lucky enough to find some free space). I'm sorry but I didn't hang any lock, so I can't give any advice to you. But of course I will return to this place, because I didn't visit the Teddy Bear Museum, and this is unforgiveable. I have to say goodbye, but I wanna show you a photo of the night view of N-Tower. Everyday changes it's color.
